February Meeting :

The Pemigewasset Chapter of Trout Unlimited welcomes Joseph Norton, Project Director for the Trout Unlimited Home Rivers Initiative project on New Hampshire’s Upper Connecticut River, at it’s Tuesday February 16, 2010 Chapter meeting held at 7 pm at The Common Man Inn, Rt. 3, Plymouth, NH.

The Home River Initiative projects goal is to work throughout the Upper Connecticut River watershed area to protect and restore the river and its tributaries in New Hampshire and Vermont. Habitat protection and restoration will benefit native fish, including brook trout, steelhead, as well as wild trout species. This project encompasses over 465 square miles and 15 tributaries in Vermont and New Hampshire including the mainstream of the Connecticut River from Murphy Dam at Lake Francis in Pittsburgh, NH to the Nulhegan River in Bloomfield, Vermont across the river from North Stratford, NH.

Home River Initiatives are collaborative, community-focused multi-year efforts that combine research, outreach, protection, restoration and youth education projects. Trout Unlimited selects watersheds where it can both make a significant difference in the condition of a particular river or fishery and also demonstrate transferable protection and restoration strategies and techniques.

Trout Unlimited with spearhead this project but will partner with New Hampshire and Vermont state volunteer councils, state and federal agencies, local industries, landowners, land trust, and other organizations.

Projects: are the mainstay of what TU chapters do.  This could be everything from stream assessment to helping shape legislation that protects and preserves a cold water fishery.  Our chapter is involved in a few projects presently but we need more members to step-up with an interest in being involved.  If you have a suggestion or want to find out how you can help, contact an officer or attend our next meeting.

***Work on the upper Pemi has wrapped up.  Todd Baldwin has done a fantastic job and for those unable to attend his update back in September I have posted some pics in the gallery and on the Exit 31 page

Calendar:

Our next general meeting is January 19th.  Check the calendar for updates on the 2010 meeting schedule.
