First Cast

Check-in now and again to see what the chapter is up to working with local Boy Scouts on the First Cast Program

Steve Hackett writes:

"We will have our second session on Monday 3/30.  We will continue these sessions every other week with a total of 5 sessions & 2 fishing trips, one to a pond & one to a river.  Our goals are to introduce the scouts to all areas of fresh water fly fishing & offering the fly fishing merit badge to those scouts that meet all the requirements.  In each session we introduce some general discussion on some aspect of fly fishing, then tie a fly, and finally introduce a knot which is homework for the scouts to learn to be tested on in the next session.  In the first session 10 Scouts attended from 2 troops &we discussed ; why fish?, ethics of fishing, introduced fly tying tools providing tools for each participant which were used to tie a wollly bugger. We finally gave them a cinch knot & the albright knot for homework.  The next session will focus on fly tying materials, hooks, & we will tie a gold ribbed hairs ear & introduce a new knot.  subsequent sessions will discuss: tackle used, the fish, where they live & what they eat, how to read a stream ,exploring the aquatic environment, casting, wading, & then putting it all together with the fishing trips.  The instructors including Dick Secord,Ray Kucharski,Angel Carrillo, Al Tailby, Ritchie Bernard, Boni Gross, Carl Lerhner, Todd Baldwin, & Steve & Joyce Hackett bring a wealth of experience to this project. Our long term goal is to interest young people in cold water fisheries teaching conservation, love & respect for the environment."
